Collateral Consequences are consequences other than judicial punishment that come along with a criminal record or probation. Some of these consequences can be predicted with certainty, like a driver license suspension, or loss of the right to vote. Other consequences are not so easy to predict, like the effect of a felony record on apartment renting or professional licenses. This is, of course, not a complete list of everything that might change in a convicted person's life, but I think it's a good start to get you thinking.
